So another unpopular opinion according to internet land…
I really like this film!
I think that Ayer (the writer and director) was pushed to change what could have been one of the best comic book films of all time, into a film that whilst enjoyable, got slated by the critics.
For those who don’t know this was what Ayer originally intended for the mood and atmosphere of the film:
It was darker, grittier, more intense.
I saw this trailer when it first came out and was like “Holy Crap On A Cracker! THIS IS MY KIND OF FILM!”
I was especially excited for a darker, bordering on harrowing portrayal of the Joker and Harley, more akin to their relationship and actions in the comic book storylines.
I mean, Clown Face skinned a dude alive because he pissed him off and in the New 52 relaunch series, Harley kills a load of kids by giving them exploding games consoles.
What can I say?
I love a bad guy (or gal) who don’t give a F.
Obviously, to those who’ve seen the film, y’all know that the film was pushed into a far more comedic mould. This affected the plot and the development of some of the characters, and basically all of Jared Leto’s Joker scenes were cut.
EVEN WITH ALL OF THAT…
CGI and special effects were off the chart.
It won the Oscar for Makeup and Hairstyling. The costumes were awesome.
AND THE ACTING HOLY SH*T!
Okay first off, Will Smith is always a win and he brought Deadshot to life better than I could believe anyone else doing it.
Viola Davis was born to play a shady secret government lady. Stone cold killa.
And Margot Robbie.
Oh the absolute gift from god, Margot Robbie.
She is Harley Quinn.
I could go on for days about all the ways she is amazing. The physicality, the vocal work, the pure unadulterated crazy coming from behind her eyes.
But I’ll put it into context for you:
This stunt right here.
She did this whole fight sequence, including the run up the wall and flip over the head on the ceiling in six inch goddamn heels with no wires or support other than her scene partner.
She IS Harley Quinn.
I know I would have loved this film if it had been aired with it’s original cut but I still think with all the concessions Ayer had to make he made a pretty awesome comic book movie.
Hopefully they will #ReleaseTheAyerCut soon!
To summarise: You get what you’re given and sometimes that’s pretty darn good.
