SPOILER ALERT IN AFFECT FOR THIS REVIEW
I chose to do this film today, the 11th of November, not only because it is set during one of the worst conflicts in our history, but because I think as well as remembering the soldiers, it is important to remember the normal civilians who stepped up to fight in anyway they could.
Marcel Marceau did this.
And this film is his story.
So this film combines several things I love:
1. Jesse Eisenberg
2. World War Two History
3. Inspiring True Stories
4. Jesse Eisenberg
All jokes aside, I cannot think of a better person to take on the role of Marcel Marceau.
Marcel Marceau was a young French man who, Jewish himself, helped save hundreds of Jewish children smuggled out of Germany and Occupied France.
He was an actor and used his mime skills not only to coach the children in the lies they used to deceive Nazi officers, but he also used it to literally save their lives, keeping them quiet as they hid in the woods near the Swiss border.
The film is beautifully captured, with a script where not one word goes to waste.
Don't be fooled though, while beautiful and inspiring, the film is also harrowing in it's depiction of the violence people faced under Nazi rule. While the violence may not be shown on screen, the horror is no less shocking and the after effects are incredibly emotional.
I can't recommend this film enough, one of the best I have watched in a long time.
Four Word Summary - beautiful story, bring tissues.
