Another brilliantly, scarily honest book.
No True Believers, follows Salma Bakkioui a Muslim – American teenage girl, who finds herself at the centre of a conspiracy, when she and her boyfriend are accused of an act of terrorism that they did not commit.
Okay so I loved this book. Read it in an hour.
But the same reasons I loved it are also the reasons I hate it.
The tension:
I love a book that builds tension well.
However, the reasons this one was so good at it were actually kind of infuriating.
Part of the reason it got tense in here reeaaalllll quick, is that Salma makes a lot of “mistakes”.
I say “mistakes” in quotation marks because if a white/Christian kid had done any of the things that pushed her towards harms way, then probably nothing would have happened.
Example: Salma makes a joke to her boyfriend about getting revenge on the kids who went after her and her little sisters because of the Islamophobia.
Now people make jokes about revenge and getting even with people all the time in my experience.
However, simply because Salma is Muslim, when her phone and text records are hacked, it automatically puts suspicion on her.
It’s just infuriating because you know as you read it that Salma literally does nothing wrong at all.
But simply because of her religion and stupid goddamn ignorance, her innocent actions make her the perfect scapegoat.
But setting my feelings about the reflection of society aside, this is a really good book.
Its action packed and thrilling and also very emotional too.
Definitely would recommend.
